Calculation Overview

Find out exactly how much you need to save each month to hit your financial goals. Customize by timeline and interest rate.

Mathematical Model & Formula

PMT = [Target - Initial * (1+r)^m] / [ ((1+r)^m - 1) / r ]

First, the future compound value of your starting balance is calculated and subtracted from your goal. This leaves a residual target, which is divided by the monthly compounding annuity accumulation factor to find the exact monthly deposit needed.

Variables Defined:
  • Target: Desired future savings goal amount
  • Initial: Current starting savings balance
  • r: Monthly compound interest rate (annual / 12)
  • m: Time horizon in months
  • PMT: Required monthly contribution amount

Worked Example Scenario

Scenario: A goal of $5,000 in 12 months with a $500 starting balance in a 4% APY account.

  1. Target = $5,000, months = 12, r = 0.04 / 12 = 0.003333, Initial = $500
  2. Calculate PV of initial: $500 * (1.003333)^12 ≈ $520.37
  3. Residual target: $5,000 - $520.37 = $4,479.63
  4. Annuity factor: [((1.003333)^12 - 1) / 0.003333] ≈ 12.22
  5. Solve monthly deposit: $4,479.63 / 12.22 = $366.58

Result: You need to save $366.58 monthly to reach your goal.
