Calculation Overview
Model your car loan terms easily. Calculate monthly payments, sales tax impacts, trade-in valuations, and total costs.
Mathematical Model & Formula
Loan Principal = Price + Tax - DownPayment - TradeIn
Vehicle tax is added up front to the sticker price, and cash contributions or trade-ins are subtracted. This final principal is then amortized standardly.
Variables Defined:
- Price: Original car sticker price
- Tax: Sticker Price * Sales Tax Rate
- DownPayment: Up-front cash contribution
- TradeIn: Agreed trade-in value of old car
Worked Example Scenario
Scenario: A $30,000 vehicle with a 7% sales tax, $5,000 down, and $2,000 trade-in.
- Vehicle purchase tax = $30,000 * 0.07 = $2,100
- Calculate loan principal: $30,000 + $2,100 - $5,000 - $2,000 = $25,100
Result: The final loan amount to be financed is $25,100.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I finance taxes and registration?
Yes. Most lenders allow buyers to roll vehicle sales tax, title charges, and dealer fees directly into the auto loan, though this increases interest costs.
